An Interview With Russell Everett, Author Of Bus Terminates Here… And So Did My Career

Russell Everett is the author of Bus Terminates Here… And So Did My Career, a niche and humorous take on the quirky characters, encounters, and events based around his career as a bus driver in the UK. To celebrate the release of Bus Terminates Here, What We Reading sat down with Russell to talk about everything from how the book came to be to his hopes of getting his readers laughing.

Thanks for speaking with us, Russell! First off, tell us a bit about yourself and what led you to the world of writing.

I work in construction at HPC in Somerset, but I live in London, so while I’m working I stay in a caravan. One day, while lying there just doom scrolling on my phone, I thought, why don’t I write a book, so I started. I only used my phone to do the writing, and told my wife. She told me about KDP, so I looked it up, and that’s how I published my book.

Talk to us about Bus Terminates Here… How did it come about, and how was the process of writing it?

Bus Terminates Here…And So Did My Career is all true stories which I was involved in whilst I was a bus driver. I’d lost my job in a warehouse, which is how my story starts.

I’d always thought about writing my incidents down in some book form but never got around to it. I did use some help from AI to help with getting things started, and once I got going, I couldn’t stop.

I also decided not to name companies or people in the book as it was a long time ago, and I didn’t want to be involved in any legal issues later down the line.

Let us know what you think of Russell’s work!

What is the number one goal you want your work to have with readers?

I want people to laugh more at me than the things I’d done, and say, “Is this bloke an idiot?” The idea of the book was to be an easy read.

What do you think makes you stand out as an author?

I think when you search true stories, you seem to come up a lot of the time with grief or crime; I wanted something more humorous, and hopefully something a little more niche in the market. It would be good to see people actually reading it on their daily commute.

What would you say has been your biggest success so far?

Definitely my wife and kids.

If you could go back in time to one book you read for the first time, what would it be and why?

It was a fiction book on a football team; I cannot remember the name of the team, although Stanford comes to mind. I bought it from WH Smith; it must have been in the 90’s as a child. I think it was a series and I enjoyed them.

What’s one tip you would give your younger self if you had the opportunity?

Make a go of anything that comes to mind; you never know how it will turn out. I had two ideas once I never followed up on, and they ended up successful (although I never knew the people who ended up doing them).
